How To Position Yourself When Changing Careers In Healthcare

There are so many reasons you may want to consider changing your career in healthcare. Maybe you’re no longer fulfilled by what you’re doing, or you want something with more stability or increased flexibility. There are many paths you can take, within the healthcare industry using the skills and experience you already have. If you want to advance your career, here are some tips to get started.

Do Your Research

Let’s start with an example. You may be currently working in the healthcare field, and looking to make a career change by becoming an RN. To do that, you’ll need to know the specific steps you need to take. To become an RN, you’ll need to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or BSN. There are limitless career opportunities in healthcare and only a fraction require working with patients. The healthcare industry offers opportunities such as Medical Billing and Coding, IT Data Analyst roles, Medical Sales / Business Development and Finance positions just to name a few. Before you decide, do some research on the options available to you.

Find a Mentor

If you’re ready to get a feel for what it’s like to transition to a new role, find a mentor. If you already work in a clinical environment, ask someone if you can shadow them for a few days. Be open to learning about what they do and how they advanced their career. Having a mentor to talk to about what you want to accomplish can help you move forward.

Develop Your Plan

Did you know that you are more likely to accomplish your goals if you write them down? To achieve what you want to do, you should be specific about your goals in your healthcare career. Create a plan and make achievable milestones for the next month, six months, or a year. For example, use the next month to enroll in classes and find a mentor. At six months, you can create a plan for the next steps. Reevaluate your goals at every milestone.
