What Does it Take to Become a Paramedic?

Thinking about becoming a paramedic?  There are a few things you’ll need to do to transition your career into a role as a paramedic. Here is what it takes for you to become a paramedic no matter what stage you’re starting at.

Complete EMT Training

To become a paramedic, you’ll need to become an EMT first. You will be required to complete EMT-B training, which is the basic EMT training and certification. It’s also important to note that some paramedic programs require hands on experience as an EMT before enrollment. This may be up to six months of experience. It’s recommended that you acquire this experience before pursuing a becoming a paramedic as it will prepare you for your career long term.

Complete a 2-year Degree Program

Many states require a 2-year degree program to become a paramedic, and it’s recommended for everyone. The advanced training you’ll receive in these programs will prepare you for the more advanced medical care you can provide patients in first-responder scenarios. It’s essential that you vet the paramedic program to ensure that it meets the requirements and has a good reputation. Resist the urge to sign up for what’s referred to as a “couch to paramedic” program because you may be missing out on key training.

Pass a State or National Certification Exam

To become an EMT, you need to pass the NREMT or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam. Paramedics will also take this exam along with the National Registry Paramedic cognitive exam. This is an adaptive computer exam designed to evaluate your knowledge. Another portion, called the psychomotor exam, will test your ability to complete a head-to-toe patient assessment, cardiac management skills, and more.

Find a Job

Once you’ve been certified, you’ll be set to find your first paramedic job. You can always reach out to the organization that employed you as an EMT to see what opportunities they have available.
