How to Be The Top Nurse on Your Shift

You want to be known as a reliable, conscientious, and talented nurse. And while doing good work and putting forth your best effort is important, could you be doing more to ensure that you’re looked at as the top nurse on your shift? There are some things you can consider when you’re at work to take management and coworkers take positive notice. Here are some things you can do to be a top nurse.

Get to Work Early

You already know that you’ll have a lot to do when you arrive to work. One trick successful nurses use is to arrive a few minutes early. Just 10 minutes before your shift can give you a chance to review your duties, make a task list, and prioritize.

Prioritize Your Tasks

Once you have a list, you need to determine what aspects are most important. When it comes to nursing, there may be situations beyond your control so take some time to create as many processes as possible.

Avoid Distraction

It’s also easy to jump from one thing to another and get easily distracted on the floor. But avoiding this can help you stay on task and get the things done that you need to ensure are completed before your shift is over. Multitasking proves to be less productive than you think.

Practice Active Listening

Humans have a tendency to only listen long enough to formulate an answer. Instead, make sure you’re taking time to truly listen to the patients, doctors, and other nurses. Repeat their instructions or requests back to them to verify.

Stay Organized

When things get out of alignment, it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks. Take time at the beginning and end of your day to reorganize your workspace. You can also take a few moments at several key points throughout the day to ensure you remain organized.

Take Notes

Have you ever been to a restaurant where the waiter doesn’t take note and then everything you get is wrong? This can be frustrating for a meal, but it can be devastating for medical care. Don’t be afraid to carry and use a note pad and pen.

Don’t Take Things Personally

Lastly, try not to take anything that happens in the course of a day personally. There will be people frustrated due to circumstances beyond their own control. They may choose to take that out on the closest person, you. Let it go.
