It’s easy to get bogged down in job boards and networking when you’re looking for your next nursing job. The market is very competitive right now, so you may also find that you miss out on opportunities if you’re looking in the wrong places. For example, many job boards aggregate positions from other sources, which means they have lag. By the time they end up on the job board, the organization may already be in the interview process. But you can narrow down your nurse job search with a few tricks and ideas that will make things happen faster.
Try Craigslist and LinkUp
Job aggregators, like Indeed, work because a company pays to have their job posting on the site. Google will then aggregate lists of jobs from all the biggest job boards. But there are two interesting exceptions that can get you jobs that you can’t see anywhere else.
Craigslist is a closed system. When a company posts a job on their local board, it isn’t picked up by aggregators at all. When you check Craigslist, you may find nursing jobs that aren’t available anywhere else. But keep in mind that there are a lot of less than savory postings on Craigslist and you’ll have to check back often and watch for red flags.
LinkUp is an aggregator site that pulls jobs only from company websites. If a hospital group in your area posts a job on their web page, LinkUp will pull that information on to their site. This keeps you from having to go back to each individual company site to search for new openings.
Check Out the American Hospital Directory’s Free Service
Hospitals have the ability to be included in the American Hospital Directory’s list for a fee. But to search the list as a nurse, or other business, it’s completely free. You can start by searching the list to find hospitals in your area that will be a great fit for you and then create a target list.
It offers an advanced search that allows you to narrow down what you’re looking for so you don’t get caught up in areas or hospitals that aren’t of interest.
You can also use the directory to find stats on your former employers that you can include on your resume.
Look at Insurance Provider Directories
If a hospital setting isn’t right for your career, there are other directories that can help you find clinics and private practices. Check out the directories for insurance providers. These directories are intended for insurance customers to find doctors in their area. They are sometimes searchable on the website or available to download as a PDF.
Once you have names and contact information, you can visit the providers’ websites or call them to find out if they’re hiring for nursing staff.
Apply with a Staffing Service
Finally, one of the best ways to have access to new positions as they come up is to work with a staffing agency that specializes in nursing placements.
A staffing partner can work with you to find whatever opportunity may be the best fit. They work with area hospitals, clinics, and private practices. They may even offer opportunities in travel nursing if you’re interested in branching out.
