Battling Burnout in the Medical Profession

The medical profession is a high-stress job, so it’s no wonder that burnout can be a factor for nurses and other medical staff. Demands on time, including long hours, and challenges with work/life balance can easily produce feelings of stress and frustration. Battling burnout in medical professionals is the job of both the employee and the employer. If you want to be certain that you don’t suffer from burnout in your healthcare career, here are a few things to consider.

Take time off

There is a challenge that a lot of U.S. employees face, not just in the medical field. We are a culture that does not value time away from work. Many workers don’t even take all of their allotted time off per year, but it’s critical that you do. Getting away from work helps you refresh and recharge so you can face it again. It goes a long way to preventing burnout. Make sure you’re taking all of your personal and vacation days each year.

Eat well and exercise

You can battle a lot of your feelings of burnout with a good, healthy diet and exercise. Relying on fast, unhealthy food can lead you to feel run down and cause you to have more frustration and a short temper in and out of the office. For example, rather than stress eating, take a break instead. And be sure to add exercise into your daily routine.

Get enough sleep

Good sleep is imperative to overall health. We often pay attention to all of the other things, like diet and exercise, and ignore sleep. This is especially true if you work split shifts or night shifts at work. Whatever your schedule, focus on good sleep habits and work hard on getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day.

Ask for help

Stress and career burnout aren’t things you have to go through alone. There are others who have experienced it before who can help. Talk to a trusted friend or family member. Talk to your boss, chances are they’ve had these feelings as well. You may also want to consult with a professional to help you work through any mental roadblocks keeping you from being happy in your work.
